Chasing the Compass Points of Spain

A route-led motorhome journey across Spain with practical planning tips and memorable stops.

From coast roads to inland viewpoints, these are the route choices that shaped our trip.

How We Planned the Route Without Overloading Driving Days

Spain looks manageable on the map, but journey times can stretch when you mix mountain roads, city access, and coastal traffic. We planned our trip in directional stages, aiming for one longer travel day followed by one or two shorter local days.

We used stop types rather than fixed nightly targets: service-stop overnights for transit days, then slower scenic stops near towns or coastlines when we wanted to explore. This kept fuel use, stress, and setup time under control.

What We Learned at Each Compass Point

In the north, weather and gradients mattered more than distance, so we built in timing flexibility. In the south, city access and parking strategy made the difference between a smooth day and a frustrating one. On east-coast stretches, we found that shoulder-season travel gave the best balance of open facilities and manageable traffic.

If you are planning a similar loop, keep three backups for every overnight area, avoid late arrivals in unfamiliar towns, and mark low-emission or vehicle restrictions before departure. Simple checks like these saved us hours across the trip.

The best Spain routes are not only about the big destinations. The most memorable days were often the short drives between them, with enough time left to actually enjoy where we parked.
