Charming cobbled streets, centuries of history, and authentic English life. Our two nights at The Red Lion Hotel reminded us you don't need a big city for a memorable getaway.
We flew in from Alicante to East Midlands Airport—quite a shock stepping off the plane in shorts and a t-shirt to find it was only 8 degrees! After a quick rummage for a hoody, we picked up a rental Fiat 500 and made a flying visit to family in Nottingham before heading to Atherstone.
The drive from Nottingham is straightforward—take the A42 to the A5, or opt for quieter country roads. We chose the scenic route and it was worth it. Once you arrive at The Red Lion Hotel, you know you've found somewhere special.
Stepping inside The Red Lion, we were greeted by warm pub interiors and genuinely friendly staff. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, with a nice blend of traditional character and contemporary touches. The bed was wonderfully cosy, and the room had everything you'd need: TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, and a spotless bathroom.
That first evening, we grabbed a drink at the bar before meeting friends for dinner. Since it was Sunday and the Red Lion had stopped serving food, we headed to The Rose Inn at nearby Baxterley—recommended by friends for its exceptional food, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The quality was outstanding. After dinner, we returned for more drinks at the Market Tavern, where I discovered a stout that genuinely tasted like a liquidised Crunchie bar!
Atherstone may be small, but it's packed with history. The town's roots go back to Roman times, and it's famous for its Shrove Tuesday Ball Game—a centuries-old tradition that turns the high street into a lively (and rather chaotic!) sporting arena.
I spent time wandering Long Street, popping into antique shops, local cafés, and a wonderful bakery with excellent sausage rolls. St. Mary's Church, just a short walk away, is beautiful—the churchyard is a peaceful spot for a quiet moment.
Our two nights were genuinely comfortable. The breakfasts were excellent—a great selection of cereals, fruit, and hot items. On Monday morning I had the vegetarian option (I don't eat meat on Mondays), and Tuesday morning the full cooked breakfast. Both were really well done.
Tucked between rolling Warwickshire countryside and rich heritage, Atherstone is one of England's most charming market towns. It offers the perfect balance: peaceful rural beauty with easy links to major destinations like Tamworth, Coventry, and Birmingham.
The Coventry Canal runs through town, offering scenic walking and cycling routes, lovely picnic spots, and the chance to watch colourful narrowboats glide by. Beyond the town centre, you'll find beautiful countryside, woodlands, and trails perfect for nature lovers.
Whether you're after history, local culture, scenic walks, or simply a welcoming town to slow down and enjoy, Atherstone deserves a spot on your Midlands itinerary. It's the kind of place where conversations start easily, everyone feels like a local, and you leave feeling like you've discovered a genuine English gem.
